Education

Education and Experience:

Over the years, I’ve participated in educational programs that guided me along this path. I took geriatric psychology courses, a year-long, medical training program with anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and coding. Then, I added business, economics and writing courses. That led to starting a medical transcription business while raising children and taking care of my immediate family. Later, I worked with seniors 65+ at Banker’s Life Insurance. We specialized in Medicare Supplements, Long Term Care plans, and Life Insurance.

My kids became active academically and athletically. Travel sports, and a few injuries – stitches, occasional broken bone, foot and ankle issues, etc., fueled my medical knowledge. Then, their hectic school and social activities taught me that managing a home – and an aging extended family – would be my calling! This was a 25-year venture.

In addition, I participated in a year-long apprenticeship at a local assisted living facility where I gained patient-centered care training. I learned to manage food and paper inventory, food handling, cooking for large groups, proper handling of bodily fluids, incontinence care, infectious disease management, memory care, CPR training, and medication management.

For my aging grandparents, parents, in-laws, and great aunts, I handled family trusts, worked with Medicare & Medicaid, Medicare supplements, VA Benefits, insurance issues, managed doctors and medications, balanced checkbooks, paid bills, and eventually hospice. I gained first-hand experience with health issues that required extensive medical attention, such as: dementia, cancer, abdominal aneurysm, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and heart attacks – you name it, we’ve seen it! On the job training, at its finest.
